Freshwater plays an important role in European societies and economies, and is essential for human consumption, energy, agriculture, industry, transport, and ecosystems. The EU water policies aim to promote sustainable water use, prevent further deterioration of water resources, and protect and enhance the status of aquatic ecosystems.
Our experts have cooperated in updating the indicator that monitors overall water abstraction from groundwater and surface water, as well as for specific economic sectors: cooling in electricity generation, agriculture, manufacturing, construction, mining and quarrying, and public water supply, including services.
The indicator is available at the EEA: Water abstraction by source and economic sector in Europe. Also, you can explore water abstraction by source and by economic sector at the country level.
