The project is an explorative analysis of security implications of water use development in the region. An examination of general socio-economic, environmental as well as sector-specific data was made to produce relevant indicators which support assessment of present situation and future possible scenarios. In addition to indicators, four different scenarios of water use with the focus on hydropower development in the Western Balkans were envisioned, depending on climate change impacts and economic development based on the EEA/OSCE project. The vision on how should hydropower be developed was made for the near- and long-term future (2030 and 2050). This served as the basis for the assessment of different scenario risks which could obstruct the achievement of vision. The risks of hydropower development are thus different under different scenarios and were elaborated accordingly, supported by present indicators.
Under the project, two regional workshops were organised to produce results in cooperation with the regional experts. The scenarios were described in the project report.
