Freshwater plays an important role in European societies and economies, and is essential for human consumption, energy, agriculture, industry, transport, and ecosystems. The EU water policies aim to promote sustainable water use, prevent further deterioration of water resources, and protect and enhance the status of aquatic ecosystems.
With the European Environment Agency, we updated the indicator that monitors overall water abstraction from groundwater and surface water, as well as for specific economic sectors: cooling in electricity generation, agriculture, manufacturing, construction, mining and quarrying, and public water supply, including services.
