The Bathing Water Directive came into force in 2006 to address the management issues of European bathing waters, with the aim of protecting bathers' health as well as protecting the environment.
In the period 2021-2024, our experts took part in the study supporting the back-to-back evaluation and impact assessment of the Bathing Water Directive (BWD) for DG Environment. This work investigated whether the BWD remains fit for purpose and explored different policy or legislative options as a way to mitigate any shortcomings.
The study has been developed by Milieu, Eunomia, COWI, and TC VODE. The study is expected to be published by DG Environment in 2025, to serve as the basis for negotiating a recast Directive.
